In conducting NKT cell-targeted therapy, we perform apheresis (component blood collection) on the patient. This involves using a machine similar to blood dialysis to extract components called monocytes from the blood over approximately 3 and a half hours.

At our clinic, a specialized team experienced in apheresis, including physicians, handles this procedure, ensuring the safe extraction of blood components.

Process of Component Blood Collection

  1. About 1 hour before starting apheresis, the clinic conducts a check-up on the patient’s current condition and provides necessary instructions such as changing clothes.

  2. Since the procedure lasts for approximately 3 to 3 and a half hours, it is recommended to urinate before the procedure.

  3. During apheresis, which involves the continuous removal and return of blood, a team consisting of physicians, nurses, and advanced medical technicians closely monitor the patient’s condition.

  4. Since both arms are occupied during apheresis (blood is drawn from one arm and returned through the other), patients typically pass the time by watching movies or engaging in other forms of entertainment.

Notes

  • Urination during apheresis is facilitated using a urinal.
  • Depending on the patient’s condition, apheresis may be canceled on the same day. Additionally, apheresis may be discontinued after it has started based on the physician’s assessment.
